Mortal Kombat 12 is the upcoming addition to the 30-year-old franchise. While an official reveal is yet to happen, Warner Bros. has already confirmed the game’s development during a recent financial meeting. Additionally, NetherRealm’s recent “Thank You from NetherRealm” YouTube video appears to tease Mortal Kombat 12, making fans eager to know more. In this article, we will delve into what we know about the game so far and what we can expect from it.
A Glimpse of Mortal Kombat 12
The “Thank You from NetherRealm” video features messages from various developers and creatives, thanking fans for their loyalty to the franchise. However, what caught fans’ attention was Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon’s message. He stated that “We’re not quite done yet,” followed by a six-second teaser, presumably for Mortal Kombat 12. The teaser shows a stream of sand falling from the bottom of a metallic object, possibly an hourglass. As the sand falls, the camera zooms in on one individual grain, which cracks and blows apart, scattering even more grains around it in the process.
The Significance of Sand
Fans speculate that the sand in the teaser holds more significance than it appears. In Mortal Kombat 11, sand played a crucial role in the game’s storyline. Kronika, the game’s villain, was the Keeper of Time and the Architect of History, who could manipulate space and time using the literal Sands of Time. She kept the Sands of Time in an hourglass that gave her the ability to alter history and pull people from across time and space, leading to Mortal Kombat 11’s converging timelines.
Moreover, using the Sands of Time, Kronika created herself a servant named Geras, an immortal construct capable of wielding the sand himself. In Mortal Kombat 11’s gameplay, Geras’ ability to wield the Sands of Time was often used to create weapons, trap opponents, and even blast them back through time. Geras faced his end in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, but his return in Mortal Kombat 12 is possible.
The Theory of a “New Era”
Another big theory behind the Mortal Kombat 12 teaser’s use of sand is the notion of a “New Era.” At the end of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, there are two endings to choose from. The first sees Shang Tsung using Kronika’s power to conquer all the realms, while the second sees Fire God Liu Kang defeat Shang Tsung and use Kronika’s power to usher in a “New Era.” This “New Era” is a brand-new timeline for the Mortal Kombat universe. If the Liu Kang ending is canon, then Mortal Kombat 12 could center around this new timeline and potentially act as another reboot for the series.
